Common salt is the main source of sodium in our diet and it is recommended that the daily consumption of sodium must be about 2000 mg and if someone is experiencing symptoms like headaches, sweating, pounding pulse, must cut his/her sodium consumption to 1500 mg per day because he is sensitive to sodium and might be hypertensive. But unfortunately the problem lies in the fact that most of our meals contain loads of sodium because taste is enhanced by adding the sodium chloride or the common salt.

Pasta sauce and the pizza sauce are the two major sources of sodium

Pasta sauce and the pizza sauce are the two major sources of sodium in the diet of a person but these are the favourites of many and people don’t want to give up these. Pasta sauce is more dangerous than the cheese and it is found that just ½ cup of pasta sauce contains about 500 mg of sodium and many people eat more than ½ cup of pasta sauce on a single serving of the pasta dinner. The sodium content of pizza sauce, though not as high as that of the pasta sauce but combined effect of sodium in cheese, dough, and toppings is very significant in one meal of pizza.

It does not mean that you stop eating these things because the easy solution is available to this, which is making your own sauce. Tomato slices, garlic cloves, oregano, basil, and olive oil can be blended together in a blender until they all are mixed well together. You will get a sauce similar to pasta and pizza sauce but with very low sodium content so that you can enjoy it with your meal without any worry. Acidic effect of tomato can be finished by adding very little amount of brown sugar or cooking it with shredded carrots or bell peppers. This sauce can also be modified by changing the composition of the ingredients to suit your taste.
