Blood pressure is the force of blood on the walls of the arteries. The measurement of blood pressure consists of two numbers, the systolic which is the pressure of blood on arteries when the heart is pumping, and the diastolic which is the pressure of blood when the heart is resting or in between beats. The normal blood pressure level is 120/80, where the first reading is of systolic and the second is of diastolic.

Usually, people who are suffering from high blood pressure are advised to manage their disease by making changes in their lifestyle, which includes a balanced diet and including some sort of physical activity in their daily routine.

For those people whose blood pressure cannot be controlled by modifying these things, they are prescribed medicines which work efficiently in lowering blood pressure. However, the common mistake that people make is that once their pressure is under control, they discontinue the medication. This can prove fatal as blood pressure can rise again as soon as you stop taking the drugs. Elevated levels can in turn lead to problems of heart attack, stroke, kidney problem and loss of vision. Hence, it is very important that you consult a doctor before deciding to stop taking the medicines. Untreated blood pressure is not something that should be taken lightly.

The best way to manage hypertension is by keeping a balanced diet and exercising regularly. Quit smoking and drink in moderation. These will eventually help you to get off of blood pressure medication but only after the doctor’s approval. Furthermore, before trying out any alternative form of treatment or products claiming to be all natural or holistic ways of controlling blood pressure, make sure that you discuss them with your doctor first.

The necessity of taking blood pressure medication arises out of various factors. First of all, if diet and exercise are not having any advantageous effect on your blood pressure, then the doctor will definitely recommend drugs that you will have to take for life. In addition to this, your age, physical condition and medical history especially of heart also play an important role in determining whether you need medication or not.  It is imperative to emphasis that once you are on medication, you should not leave it without first discussing with a physician. If you are unable to take the medicine for some reason, perhaps because you have an allergic reaction to it like swelling of the face or mouth or a body rash, then inform your doctor of it, who will then change your medicine. Medicine should not be stopped suddenly as you can also experience withdrawal symptoms like dizziness, vomiting, nausea or loss of sleep besides putting stress on your heart.

Conclusively, discuss with your doctor before making any change regarding your blood pressure medicine as it can have serious implications.
