High Blood Pressure and Progesterone

What’s Progesterone? Progesterone is a naturally secreted hormone in ovulating women. It's a production of the ovaries, produced within the last two weeks of the menstrual cycle, in case of women falling in the reproductive age group.

Natural progesterone has no adverse side effects. On the contrary, this can be very useful in regulation, control, and prevention of illnesses like thyroid dysfunction and osteoporosis.

Progesterone, in its natural form, has metabolic and curative properties. It helps regulate the menstrual cycle and may deal with uterine bleeding. It's helpful in stopping osteoporosis and facilitates the correct functioning of the thyroid gland. It is also known to have cardio vascular benefits.

Apart from the natural form, progesterone is also accessible in synthetic form. Artificial progesterone is often administered as a part of hormone therapy for women over 65 years. Progesterone, in capsule form, is also available. Contraceptive pills, used by women for birth control purposes, contain progestin, an artificial hormone that imitates the function of progesterone.

The synthetic or artificial forms of progesterone can set off a number of undesirable reactions in the body. Artificial progesterone can result in high blood pressure, blood clots, and even heart attacks.

Synthetic progesterone increases blood clotting and may trigger blood to clot in the legs and lungs. Increased clotting of blood can often result in heart attack and stroke. Headaches, tenderness of the breast, vaginal discharge, urinary ailments, and fatigue are another unwanted side effects of this artificial hormone.

Birth control tablets that contain progestin also can lead to increase in blood pressure. In some instances, discontinuation of the drugs may become imperative for the regulation of blood pressure.

Hypertension and progesterone in synthetic form are closely related. Through research conducted on rats, it has been proved that progesterone can lead to a raise in blood pressure levels.

Even in the human beings, high blood pressure and progesterone in artificial form are inter-linked. Progesterone intake, in the form of capsules, birth control pills or hormone therapy may cause existing blood pressure levels to rise. Progesterone intake can result in mild, moderate, or serious hypertension. The effects can be quite severe in case of persons already affected by hypertension.

The unwanted side effects of artificial progesterone far outweigh any benefits. This has led to a shift in focus in the direction of natural progesterone. As naturally occurring progesterone is devoid of any harmful side effects and is quite beneficial, there's an attempt and an urgent need to utilize pure forms of progesterone for medical purposes.

Efforts are being made to discover the possibility of using pure progesterone for management, prevention, and cure of many critical ailments.
