High blood pressure is a common condition. Once you have been diagnosed with it, you will most probably be given drugs to get it under control. Diuretics are one type of medicine that is given to hypertensive patients. The purpose of diuretics is to flush out excess fluid in the body through urination. In doing so, sodium is also eliminated with excess water. However, diuretics also have unpleasant side effects. People who want to avoid these side effects usually try a more natural way of getting rid of the excess fluid from their bodies. Fortunately for them, there are natural diuretics that are as effective as the medicinal ones.

Water: People often forget the benefits of drinking water that acts as a natural diuretic. You can get rid of excess fluid by drinking at least six to eight glasses of water daily.

Watermelon: This is a large, seasonal fruit with a hard green rind and a red, pink or orange flesh. Watermelons are 92 percent water and a delicious way to reduce water retention. It aids in increasing urination and can be safely used by pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding.

Cranberry: These come from red berries of a small shrub and are native to the Northern Hemisphere. Drinking its juice without sugar is the most effective way to eliminate excess fluid from your body. If you are on warfarin, then do not drink cranberry juice as it can react with it.

Green tea:  Green tea has been long used as a diuretic in traditional Chinese medicine. It is made form the leaves of the tea plant Camellia sinensis. Sip three cups of green tea daily to reduce water retention. However, if you have kidney problem, heart disease, ulcers, during pregnancy, breastfeeding or if you have an anxiety disorder.

Parsley: This herb comes from a biennial plant with feathery green leaves and it originated in Mediterranean region. It is commonly used in recipes but is also very effective in ridding the body of excess fluid. A cup of parsley tea drank twice a day will be very helpful for hypertensive patients. Before using it, make sure that your medicines will not interact with parsley. It should not be used by people who have kidney disease, pregnant women or those who are breastfeeding.

These natural diuretics are easily available. However, before using them, it is still necessary to consult a doctor.
